Your holiday home in Soglio

Formerly the house was called Casa von Paepcke (that’s the name of my grandfather, who bought the house in the 1960s). As there are no street names in Soglio, the postal address is Casa 151, 7610 Soglio.

It is located between neighboring houses on the eastern edge of the village Soglio. The location on the mountainside offers a clear view over the mountain landscape and the roofs of the village.

Built from solid natural stone 300 years ago, the house was restored in the 1960s by making sure to harmonize history with functionality. The interior comprises mostly wood, but also the typical Bergeller granite, as it has been used in this region for generations.

Eckdaten Haus 151

Maximalbelegung: 8 Personen

EC: vaulted kitchen with dining area and open fireplace. Access to the garden.
Living area with stone oven.

1st floor: access to the garden, 1 double room with balcony, 1 single room, bathroom with toilet and bathtub

DG: 2 double, 1 single, bathroom with toilet and shower

Terraced garden with deckchairs and seats, flower and herb beds, pear tree

The house can be rented by max. 8 people.
Let’s start in the “good room” on the ground floor. Here, a stone oven and old Bünden peasant furniture provide cosiness. Also on TV, radio and CD must not be waived. On the same level, you will find the vaulted kitchen, which was left in its original state. (Kitchen equipped with dishwasher.)
The open fireplace under the old vault and the dining table invite to happy hours.

Let’s go to the first floor: There you will find a double room with balcony, a single room and a bathroom with toilet and bathtub.

Continue to the attic: Two double rooms, one single room and of course bathroom with toilet and shower.

An electric central hot air heating ensures pleasant warmth throughout the house. In the basement are washer and dryer. The firewood is stored in the room next door.

In Soglio you have a good cell phone reception!

Fotos Haus 151

The image of the village has withstood time: old farmhouses and baroque palazzi with gray granite roofs, stone fountains and narrow cobbled streets.
Soglio is also known for its chestnut groves.

In this magnificent mountainous alpine world, an intact cultural landscape, free from through traffic, you can spend wonderful holidays.
The house is called “151” because there are no street names in Soglio … and cars come from visitors only for loading and unloading in the village.
(Paid parking at the village entrance)

The Bergellers know each other, yet they are open to guests from all over the world.

The official language is Italian. The inhabitants speak Bergeller dialect * and also German.

* e.g. “Good night = Bona Nütsch

1000 meters, then you are at the Albigna Reservoir, – on foot or by cable car.
From Soglio you can enjoy the view of the Sciora group with the Pitz Badile, which belongs to the
one of the most famous climbing mountains in the Alps.

After 5 kilometers you are in Italy, – after 30 km on Lake Como with palm trees and beach.

Do you want to be fashionable? St. Moritz is only 38 km away.

My father drew the house for us a few years ago. We hope it helps you to find your way around.
The drawings have no claim to scale and completeness.

The widely visible village church is of course the landmark of Soglio. It is from the 15th century.
You should also visit the Hotel Palazzo Salis. The palazzo, surrounded by a wonderful historical garden, guards the charm of bygone days.
Take a hike through the light chestnut forests below Soglio:
You could go to the border town of Castasegna and start up again after eating a chestnut cake.

Hiking and excursions

The Bergell
With its well-tended meadows and forests is still an intact rural cultural landscape. The mountain meadows are mowed and grazed above the tree line.
The spectacular Upper Engadin lake landscape (Maloja, Sils-Maria, St. Moritz etc.) is always worth a visit.

Stampa: museum of local history and ateliers of the Giacometti family
(from: centrogiacometti.ch)
The small mountain village of Stampa was shaped by the extraordinary Giacometti family for almost one hundred years. They carried in two generations their surname Giacometti and thus the fame of the Bergell in the whole world. Their final resting place in the cemetery of San Giorgio in Borgonovo unites them again in the small valley between Maloja Pass and Chiavenna.

Excursions to Italy

Recommended are: Restaurant, Lanterna verde ‘in Villa di Chiavenna, the waterfalls of Piuro and the Vertemate Palace in Prosto di Piuro.

Further to south you reach the small Italian town of Chiavenna with its extensive pedestrian zone, weekly market (velvet) and many historic buildings.

Lake Como is less than an hour’s drive away.

In the parlor of the Casa 151 you will find maps and information about many destinations.

Sehr geehrter Herr Kirchhoff,

We very much enjoyed staying at your house. It was a comfortable place for the four of us, the bedrooms were nice, the beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped, good showers, it was fun to stay in an old stone house (we don't have houses like that in the US).
Soglio is a fantastic town, peaceful, beautiful, good hikes right out the door, convenient to Italy for a different experience. If we come back to Soglio, we would want to stay in your house again.
Best regards, Bruce

Idyllic stay
Five of us rented this house and it was fabulous. We took side trips and long walks in the country, including to other villages. It was so much more "authentic" than other places in Switzerland. We felt like we lived there. One of our party met someone who sold her a music stand. We shopped at a store that was often empty and we just left money and took what we needed. It was three or so years ago but we want to go back someday. We sat in the back garden some days and just enjoyed being there. We drove to Italy close by to shop much more cheaply for food.
